Welcome to San Francisco

San Francisco is a vibrant city located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula in California. As of 2023, it boasts a population of approximately 809,000 residents, making it the fourth-most populous city in the state and a key cultural, commercial, and financial center in the region. Known for its iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, San Francisco serves as a major tourist destination with over 1.7 million international visitors recorded in 2022 and approximately 20 million domestic tourists.

Historical Significance

The history of San Francisco is rich and multifaceted. Originally inhabited by the Yelamu tribe, the area saw European settlement in the late 18th century with the establishment of the Presidio and Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1776. The city’s rapid growth began during the California Gold Rush of 1849, transforming it from a small hamlet into a bustling port. The devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 resulted in significant destruction, but the city quickly rose from the ashes, showcasing resilience by hosting the Panama–Pacific International Exposition in 1915.

Modern-Day San Francisco

Today, San Francisco is a hub of innovation and creativity, housing numerous tech giants such as Salesforce, Uber, and Airbnb, contributing to its GDP of approximately $263.1 billion in 2023.
